Attitudes-copyrights & credits

The controversy related to the story credits for the Movie 'Three Idiots' clearly brings out the insensitive attitude of Bollywood regarding creativity of writers. This is a reflection of the value system of the traditional Indian society which gave more importance to traders than intellectuals.

The attitude of the makers of the films seems to be that once they paid the writer for the story, his name need not be mentioned anywhere. It was sad indeed to see Amir Khan, who is known for his sensitivity, also endorsing the makers of the film and criticising the original writer Chetan Bhagat.

It is time that we realise that art has a value much beyond the market compensation paid for it. All art is a gift of God to mankind, and is unique. That is what the Thanks-giving is all about. Lata Mangeshkar's voice, Madan Mohan's compositions, Hussain's paintings-the list is endless - all these have enriched our mundane life and can not be measured in term of money. The only thing we can do and should do is to express our gratitude to all these creative geniuses.

Is it really too much to ask?
